Stay with Righteousness, Swim in Art(2022) draws inspiration from the lingering atmosphere of Taiwanese art academies, encapsulated by the recurring mindset: "My work is what matters; others' feelings don’t." This multifaceted piece challenges the values of art and morality, seeking to unsettle the Machiavellian pursuit of artistic creation often found in art schools.
The concept was sparked during collective System Guo's routine gatherings, particularly discussions around the so-called “detestable figures” of the art academy. We observed that these individuals often share a defining trait: elevating their creations above all else in the universe. In this environment, moral education has seemingly become a laughingstock, an antiquated relic of the past. As pioneers of avant-garde culture, it seems we are expected to transcend morality, scorn goodness, and embrace this ethos—something we collectively find deeply unsettling.
A great work of art that arises from unethical actions cannot justify the external costs it creates through "artistic merit." We hold these truths to be self-evident: that empathy, above the pursuit of art, should be a fundamental human aspiration.
"Stay with Righteousness, Swim in Art" adopts a traditional approach to moral education, structured into three parts: slogans, cautionary tales, and animation. Its core messages include: “We refuse to stand on the lower ground of morality; we aim for the moral high ground” and “A strong mind determines the quality of life.”
Through this work, we hope that those who identify with the “detestable” archetype might experience an awakening, realizing “You were wrong; reflect on this” and emerging as more well-rounded individuals. At the same time, we invite a reexamination of the boundaries between morality and art.
