Fourty-Four Stone Lions (2020)
I invited several native Mandarin speakers to recite the classic tongue twister, "Fourty-Four Stone Lions", using their natural pronunciation habits. Afterward, they listened to a computer-generated version with standardized pronunciation and were then asked to try replicating it as closely as possible.

The collected audio recordings of the tongue twisters were fed into various auto-captioning software programs.

Building on my previous works, this piece uses the computer as a benchmark to examine the nuances of individual accents. It questions the societal pursuit of linguistic "standards" and asks: is producing a standardized voice truly a way to foster cultural identity?
